About Scars

Scarring is the body’s response to trauma and is part of the natural healing process. There are different types of scars depending on the cause and severity of injury.

Scars produced from minor cuts and scrapes will fade gradually over time. More serious trauma, which may be caused by accidents, burns, insect bites, surgery, acne and body piercing, can lead to problem scarring. Scars that are thick, raised and discolored, usually dark brown, red or purple, are known as hypertrophic scars. The tendency for this type of scarring is usually inherited. Scars that grow beyond the boundaries of the healing injury and are also discolored are known as keloid scars. Young people and people with darker skin may be more prone to both types of problem scarring.
